Coalición Canaria and Municipalistas Primero Canarias finalised their alliance on Wednesday to stand together in the election for the Congress of Deputies in both Canary Islands constituencies, led by the mayor of Gáldar (Gran Canaria), Teodoro Sosa, in Las Palmas, and Cristina Valido in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
In a joint statement, the two nationalist parties have opened the door to seeking the support of «other municipal and island-based forces in the archipelago within the framework of the Canarian Unity Forum», which was set up by Primero Canarias.
The aim of this alliance, they explained, «is to increase the representation of Canarian nationalists in the Spanish Parliament so that they can have a voice of their own to defend the interests of the Canary Islands more forcefully in Madrid».
Electoral alliance: Parties focus on shared Canary Island interests
CC and 1ºCAN have expressed regret at the polarisation currently prevailing in Spanish politics, which is why they have proposed «putting forward a unified list of candidates, comprising all parties strictly committed to the Canary Islands, which offers a solid and genuine alternative to the citizens of the islands».
In the statement, both parties also announced that the MPs and senators from this coalition «will advocate for the updating of state investment and an improvement in the resources allocated to essential policies and strategic projects for the archipelago».
They will therefore focus on specific measures to tackle the housing challenge, strengthen the social safety net, improve income redistribution, make progress on equal opportunities, drive forward the energy transition and address the effects of climate change.
With this new election, the nationalists hope to avoid a repeat of what happened in previous elections, where «the fragmentation of the Canarian vote has weakened their electoral prospects, negatively affecting the achievement of progress for the archipelago».
Candidate lists for both provinces are taking shape
The Canarian unity candidacies for the Congress will be headed by Cristina Valido in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and by Teodoro Sosa as the lead candidate and María Fernández as the second candidate in the province of Las Palmas.
Apart from the lead candidates, the names of those who will make up the various lists of candidates for the Congress and the Senate will be announced in the coming days, once they have been registered with the Electoral Commission, the two parties have stated in their joint press release.
The agreement will be presented this Saturday in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with the signing of the ‚Declaration for Canarian Unity in Madrid‘, which is expected to be endorsed by around twenty political groups from across the archipelago.
