The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, stated on Monday that problems do not simply disappear when elections are called; there are therefore 55 days remaining, until 29 November, to tackle the challenges facing the islands, such as restricting the purchase of property by foreign nationals.
Speaking to the media, the regional president pointed out that the head of the central government, Pedro Sánchez, who announced on Monday that a general election would be held on 29 Name, is the only one «who could in any way take that step, give the starting signal».
Meanwhile, he continued, the regional government will carry on working «right up to the very last day, because the central government will not take office until 29 November itself» and, he pointed out, the problems «are still there».
Canary Islands: Government aims to fulfil pre-election pledges
In the run-up to the elections, the Canary Islands Government «hopes and intends» to introduce the clause restricting the purchase of property by foreigners in the Canary Islands, «which is causing such distortion in our market», continued the regional president, who also highlighted the need to fulfil commitments to the island of La Palma and, specifically, to ensure that the outstanding budget allocations are paid out.
«We still have a busy schedule ahead of us because we have a duty and a responsibility to work right up until the very last day,» insisted Fernando Clavijo.
General election: Clavijo hopes for a fair election campaign
In his view, it is clear that, after more than a year of defeat after defeat in the Congress of Deputies, the lack of a budget, and the difficulties in finding solutions to the problems faced by citizens, «the natural thing to do was to give the people a voice and let them vote».
In this regard, he has expressed his hope that the election campaign will be «positive and fair, in the sense that it will avoid tension, disrespect, noise and everything else that causes the public to lose faith in it», and this, at least, is how Coalición Canaria intends to approach it.
He went on to say that it would be desirable to form a stable government «that is sensitive to the difficulties faced by the islands».
Coalición Canaria is focusing on door-to-door campaigning
As for whether political polarisation could harm Coalición Canaria, Fernando Clavijo has emphasised that the Canarian nationalists will run a campaign much like the ones they have always run: «door-to-door, citizen-to-citizen».
In his view, polarisation creates a lot of noise and makes it difficult for ideas to get across, but CC is confident that the work that has been done and its proposal for the islands «will reach the public».
Canary Islands: La Palma aid and property law remain unresolved
As for the outstanding issues concerning the Canary Islands, he stated that he hopes the 200 million euros that the Canary Islands Government has had to advance for the reconstruction of La Palma will arrive before 29 November, and that the 60 per cent income tax rebate for 2027 will also be approved.
As regards the restrictions on property purchases by foreign nationals, Fernando Clavijo has proposed that these be set out in a decree-law and ratified by the Permanent Deputation.
