Dolores Corujo, the PSOE’s candidate for the Congress of Deputies in Las Palmas, is confident that in the forthcoming general election her party will improve on the results achieved in the 2023 election, when the Socialists won three seats in that province.
«We are convinced that the Canary Islands will once again demonstrate that we do not want confrontation, that we do not want people to be singled out, that we want to live together in harmony, that we want democracy and, above all, that we want rights, and we do not want the right wing or the far right to govern our country or determine the future of our land,» said Corujo on Wednesday after registering the PSOE’s list with the Provincial Electoral Commission.
The Socialist candidate believes «in all honesty» that things will «improve», because the 2023 elections «were rather complex» and «lacked the level of mobilisation we are seeing today».
PSOE: Corujo warns of social setbacks in the event of a change of government
«Others certainly make a lot of noise, and they do it well, but we have the social majority, who know that on 29 November we’ll be putting absolutely everything on the line,» according to Corujo.
In her view, the public will not vote for a rollback in housing, education or healthcare, and the right «is already stating quite clearly and without batting an eyelid that it is going to amend the labour reform, that collective agreements and bargaining will disappear» and that they will privatise sick leave.
Added to this is the threat that the PSOE perceives to the future of pensions in the event of a change of government.
Corujo maintains that, in the face of a public system established by the Toledo Pact, right-wing parties «clearly state that they believe in a different system, a public-private system», but seek to conceal this before the elections through «a perverse use of lies to manipulate and deceive the public».
«And that is bound to take its toll,» she states.
Corujo went to the Electoral Commission to register the PSOE’s candidate lists, accompanied by Luc André Diouf, who is also standing for the Congress of Deputies, and by Juan Jesús Facundo and Marta Saavedra, who are standing for the Senate in Gran Canaria.
