The National Political Council (CPN) of Coalición Canaria unanimously nominated Fernando Clavijo on Saturday as the nationalist party’s candidate for the presidency of the Canary Islands in the regional elections in May 2027.

Following the vote, Clavijo expressed his gratitude for the support received and stated that Coalición Canaria is facing «one of those historic moments» in the face of the political and economic challenges which, in his view, will shape the future of the archipelago.

«The future is shaped by the consequences of the decisions we make today,» said the leader, who has advocated a model of development that ensures that Canarians «do not feel like strangers in our own land».

Canary Islands: Clavijo cites the financial framework and development model as challenges

Among the main challenges, the President of the Canary Islands has highlighted the negotiations on the new European financial framework and the drafting of the so-called ‚Canary Islands Decree‘, which he has described as key to shaping the archipelago’s relations with the Spanish Government.

Clavijo has also called for a «rethinking» of the Canary Islands‘ development model and has advocated for economic growth linked not only to «prosperity» but also to the preservation of identity and «Canarianness» in the face of the effects of globalisation.

Clavijo also maintained that his party would govern «with conviction» rather than «out of fear», and defended Canarian identity in the face of the effects of globalisation.

«We are a wonderful people who should be very proud of what we have been, what we are and what we are going to be,» he said.

Coalición Canaria: Clavijo calls for a united nationalist front

The candidate has also called for unity amongst nationalists in the Canary Islands and has highlighted the work carried out by the Coalición Canaria organisation in Gran Canaria to strengthen this process.

«The more united the nationalist movement is, the brighter the future will be for this region,» said Clavijo, who added that his party would continue to defend the interests of the Canary Islands.

Also speaking at the event were the island secretaries, the national secretary for Organisation, David Toledo; the president of CC Venezuela, Johny Matías; and the representative of the Young Nationalists of the Canary Islands, Raquel Castro, who all expressed their «total and absolute» support for Clavijo.
