The Vice-President and Regional Minister for the Economy, Industry, Trade and the Self-Employed of the Canary Islands Government, Manuel Domínguez, announced on Tuesday that the regional government intends to allocate funds in the 2027 regional budget to launch a new household appliance replacement scheme, following the high demand for the first edition.
Domínguez gave this response during the plenary session of the Canary Islands Parliament to Raúl Acosta, a member of the Agrupación Herreña Independiente, who had called for a review of the funding allocated to El Hierro, as he considered the 8,000 euros initially allocated to the island to be insufficient.
Acosta pointed out that, in the second round of grants, just three hours after the application period opened, only around 50 euros remained available, and he called for future calls for applications to review both the funding allocation and the distribution criteria.
Household appliance replacement scheme: Government defends allocation of funds
The Vice-President argued that the funds were distributed «fairly», first amongst the provinces and then amongst the islands according to their population, and stated that demand exceeded forecasts across the entire archipelago.
«We never thought demand would reach the levels it has,» admitted Domínguez, who pointed out that stocks of some household appliances had even run out.
He explained that the Government had hoped that the programme’s requirements, such as owning an old, energy-inefficient appliance and covering part of the replacement cost, would limit the number of applications.
Domínguez added, in response to Acosta, that the future programme will continue to ensure that citizens receive «equal treatment» regardless of which island they live on.
