Minister Ángel Víctor Torres announced on Friday that he will not be standing as a candidate for the PSOE in the general election on 29 November, as he intends to prioritise his bid to become President of the Canary Islands Government once again following the 2027 regional elections.
«My aim, my priority, is to win the elections in the Canary Islands again. Therefore, I will not be standing as a candidate for the Congress of Deputies. There will be other colleagues who will be on those lists for the province of Las Palmas and the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife,» he said, when asked about this matter at an event in Binéfar (Huesca)
The PSOE’s Canary Islands Regional Committee is due to meet next Thursday, 15 October, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to approve the lists of candidates for the Congress of Deputies and the Senate, with some sections of the party having backed Torres as their main asset as lead candidate, a possibility that has now been ruled out.
Ángel Víctor Torres: Has agreed to campaign for PSOE candidates
The Socialist leader has indeed pledged to devote himself «body and soul, with every effort» to supporting the candidates nominated by his party, in order to «win the elections in the Canary Islands once again».
«The Socialist Party has won the last seven elections out of the seven that have been held in the Canary Islands. We have won both iterations of the European elections, we won all three iterations of the general elections in the Canary Islands, and we have won both iterations of the regional elections,» he pointed out
He therefore maintains that the Socialists are starting out on the islands «from a very strong position» and is confident that they will secure an eighth consecutive election victory on the islands, «without a doubt».
«I will do my utmost, as I always have, to ensure that this happens. We have some outstanding candidates who will be on those lists, and I will be standing alongside them,» he said.
