The Canary Islands are developing two major energy projects on Gran Canaria. The first is a 66-kilovolt power line designed to strengthen the island’s electricity grid. Red Eléctrica de España is constructing the line. The project is intended to improve Gran Canaria’s entire energy infrastructure.

The «Santa Lucía del Mar» hybrid plant has also been given the «green light». With a capacity of 1.8 megawatts, it generates electricity from wind and solar power. The approval is published in the Official Journal of the Canary Islands.

According to the announcement, the hybrid plant is supporting the energy transition in Gran Canaria. Both decisions were published together on Thursday, with the approval of the hybrid plant following immediately after that for the power line.

Gran Canaria strengthens its electricity supply

The approvals thus relate to two different stages of the electricity supply in Gran Canaria: generation from wind and solar power, and the subsequent transmission via the grid. However, the announcements do not contain any details on costs, construction time or the route of the power lines. These are set out in the planning documents, which can now be implemented.

The Official Gazette brings together projects from all departments. Most recently, for example, it announced the new vocational training centre in Icod de los Vinos on Tenerife. With regard to construction projects, the Canary Islands Government is also working, through a separate resolution, to issue planning permission more quickly in future.
