The San Marcos Secondary School in Icod de los Vinos is to be developed into a «Centre for Integrated Vocational Training». This will significantly enhance and expand the school’s facilities. This move follows a decision by the Canary Islands Government. The school in the north of Tenerife is set to offer vocational training and courses for jobseekers in future, alongside its regular teaching programme.

The regional government published the decision on Monday in the Canary Islands‘ official gazette, the BOC. The Canary Islands‘ Integrated Vocational Training Centres bring together school-based training programmes, adult education and courses for jobseekers under one roof.

For the north of Tenerife, this expansion represents a clear improvement. Furthermore, Icod de los Vinos is one of the five most affordable municipalities in the Canary Islands in terms of rent levels. In April, at 1,473 euros per square metre, the municipality was the only place outside Gran Canaria in this top group. Affordable housing and a wider range of training opportunities thus come together in a strategically advantageous location. This means that jobseekers and vocational students can live affordably close to their place of study.

Tenerife: Vocational school in Icod de los Vinos approved

The Canary Islands Government uses the Official Gazette to publish major decisions. In recent months, the establishment of an observatory for historic town centres was announced there, amongst other things. Further aid for the victims of the volcanic eruption on La Palma was also recently published in the BOC.

The new courses in Icod de los Vinos are set to begin at the start of the new school year. The plan is to accommodate up to 400 students. Furthermore, according to current plans, three new courses are to be added. Until now, some of these have been limited to the vocational colleges in La Laguna and Santa Cruz. Icod de los Vinos is intended to relieve the pressure on the classes there whilst ensuring that more people can develop their skills.
