The Doctors‘ Union (CESM) and the Canary Islands Medical Staff Union (SEMCA) announced on Wednesday that they were calling for an indefinite strike in the Canary Islands Health Service from 16 October, due to ongoing disagreements between the unions and the Regional Ministry of Health.

The announcement of this strike comes on the same day that the nationwide doctors‘ industrial action has been postponed pending the general election, and just one week after the UGT trade union signed a preliminary agreement with the Regional Ministry of Health, thereby considering the dispute resolved on its part.

However, the main trade unions representing medical staff in the Canary Islands maintain that the Regional Ministry has not responded to the 18 objectives set out as part of a strategic plan to improve their working conditions and safeguard the quality of the public healthcare system.
