The Canary Islands Government’s Directorate-General for Emergencies declared a pre-alert status in Lanzarote on Saturday following a power cut that affected some 73,600 customers on the island, with the exception of the Playa Blanca area, which remains connected to the grid via its link with Fuerteventura.
The measure was adopted at 07:15 in accordance with the Territorial Civil Protection Emergency Plan for the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (PLATECA), as reported by the Directorate-General for Emergencies.
The incident began at 05:44 due to a fault in the 66-kilovolt electricity network at the Mácher substation, in the municipality of Tías, which caused an initial power cut and initially affected some 51,703 customers.
Lanzarote: Second power cut affects 73,600 electricity customers
Four minutes later, whilst work was underway to restore the service, a further incident occurred at the San Bartolomé and Punta Grande substations, resulting in a loss of electricity generation and affecting some 73,600 customers.
According to Endesa, the electricity system is gradually returning to normal. At 06:47, there were still around 39,000 customers without power; this figure subsequently fell to around 8,463 affected customers, although the figure may vary whilst restoration work continues.
The Lanzarote Emergency Consortium has reported that at 7.30 am, around 700 customers were still without electricity.
The Directorate-General for Emergencies has explained that the pre-alert declaration will enable the situation to be monitored, the relevant authorities and organisations to be co-ordinated, and the potential impact on essential services to be assessed.
