In Tías on Lanzarote, a nine-year-old girl died at the scene of a pedestrian accident on Calle La Luchada. The 112 emergency call centre received the call at 17.23 on Thursday.
The first person to attend to the child was a passer-by who identified himself as a doctor. He diagnosed a cardiac arrest and began resuscitation. The emergency services dispatched a medical response vehicle and an ambulance, and also called in a doctor and a nurse from the Tías health centre, while Civil Protection took the staff to the scene of the accident.
The paramedics continued to perform advanced resuscitation, but to no avail. The emergency services team eventually confirmed the girl’s death, and the local police recorded the accident. No details regarding the circumstances of the incident are provided in the Canary Islands Government incident report.
Lanzarote: Five road deaths since the start of the year
According to incident reports from the 112 emergency call centre, this is the third time this year that a vehicle has struck a pedestrian in Tías. The most recent fatality in the municipality occurred on 21 September in a road traffic accident. Fatal accidents were also reported on 8 August in Haría and on 11 June in Yaiza, in which two people lost their lives.
If the girl is included, the number of road deaths reported by the 112 emergency call centre for Lanzarote since the start of the year stands at five. During the same period last year, the figure was six. However, not every fatal accident is included in these reports.
Across the Canary Islands as a whole, the DGT traffic authority had recorded 37 fatalities on rural roads by 4 November, compared with 46 during the same period last year. This represents a fall of 19.6 per cent, although accidents in urban areas are not included in these statistics. On Tenerife, the number of road deaths has only fallen slightly recently. Since 1 October, new traffic regulations to protect pedestrians and cyclists have been in force on the islands.
