Burial of the Sardine lights up Puerto de la Cruz in pictures

A papier mache fish is paraded through town by mock widows and incense bearers before being burned at the harbour. On Tenerife, Ash Wednesday marks the start of the street carnival rather than its end.

On Ash Wednesday – unlike in the Rhineland – things are far from over in the Canary Islands. In most towns, the Carnival continues in full swing. In Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife, the burial of the sardine is actually just the starting signal for the street carnival. Below you can see pictures of the burial of the sardine in Tenerife.
