One can only hope that neither the locals nor residents nor tourists will be swayed by the current demonstrations. The problem lies with the politicians. It is not tourism that is to blame for the situation, but the way it is managed.
Instead of building more hotels, we should be building homes for local people. Furthermore, holiday rentals must be regulated. We need inspections, better pay for workers, and better education and training. Above all, employment contracts must be improved – even in state-owned enterprises.
A sewerage system is also required. Wastewater from both domestic and commercial sources continues to flow into the sea. As a result, beaches even have to be closed in the summer.
Politicians need to take action at long last. What would become of the Canary Islands if the tourists stopped coming? They produce very little and export hardly anything. And it is not the car hire that is causing the traffic jams, but rather the improved standard of living – which the inhabitants of the Canary Islands certainly deserve. These days, every member of the family has their own car.
