Reina Sofia Tenerife South Airport is the larger of the two airports on Tenerife. The airport opened on 6 November 1978. It handles around 70 per cent of passenger traffic and just over 30 per cent of freight traffic on the Canary Islands. The international airport code is TFS.
Tenerife South Airport: Airport information
The airport was named after the Spanish monarch who opened it in 1978. It was specifically built to cater for holiday traffic, in order to relieve the pressure on Tenerife North Airport, which is more than 30 years older.
The opening also opened up the southern part of the largest of the Canary Islands to tourism. To ensure a fast connection to the north of Tenerife, work on the „Autopista del Sur de Tenerife“ (TF-1) was also stepped up in time for the opening.

Tenerife South: TFS Tourist Airport
The airport is mainly served by charter flights operated by Spanish, German, British and Scandinavian airlines. In 2007, the first direct flights to Eastern Europe were also launched.
In July 2007, the Ministry of Transport announced one billion euros in funding for air transport for the year 2020. The money was used to expand Tenerife South Airport so that it could handle the many millions of passengers it receives each year (photos of the airport’s redevelopment can be found below). This has resulted in a further significant increase in air traffic and passenger handling on Tenerife compared with the time of the original planning.
Buses at Tenerife South Airport
Regular bus services connect the airport with all the towns on the island. There are even direct express bus services to the capital, Santa Cruz and to the island’s main resort, Puerto de la Cruz.
Reina Sofia Airport handles more than 12.3 million passengers a year. It is operated by AENA. You can find all the information you need on cheap flights to Tenerife here.
