Tenerife is set for a weekend full of sizzling rhythms and partying: the Summer Carnival is being celebrated this weekend in Puerto de la Cruz. A three-day programme awaits visitors. We’ll let you know when everything’s happening.
This year’s carnival in Tenerife got off to a difficult start. The big carnival parade in Santa Cruz had to be cancelled due to a storm and a tragic incident. A few days later, the parade in Puerto de la Cruz was also called off. At least that one was rescheduled, albeit in a slightly scaled-down form.
It’s now up to the summer to make it a success. And so Puerto de la Cruz looks back with satisfaction on its relatively new tradition: the summer carnival. It’s that time again this weekend. And here’s what’s on the programme:
Summer Carnival in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife
Under the motto „Viva México!“, the celebrations will take place from 19 to 21 September. The Martiánez outdoor swimming pool and Playa Jardín will be at the heart of the carnival festivities. Over the course of three days, carnival culture and diversity will be celebrated there with plenty of music.
Orchestras, DJs, drag performers, batucadas, comparsas and shows are set to enthral the audience. There’ll also be plenty of sizzling samba rhythms. It all kicks off with a grand gala on Friday evening from 9 pm at the outdoor swimming pool on the promenade in Puerto de la Cruz.
The programme for the summer carnival on Tenerife
On Saturday, the „Festival Diversas“ will be hosted from 7 pm by the well-known drag artist Marcela Kaufmann, alongside Iván Padrón. Following this, from around 9 pm, „La Gran Pachanga del Carnaval“ will be celebrated. The city has announced a party featuring performances by Ni un pelo de Tonto, Boys Machine and DJ Ubay Hernández.
On Sunday, from 12 noon, the carnival will be celebrated for two hours at the reopened Playa Jardín, featuring dance and music groups from Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz, as well as from La Palma. The festivities will then continue until around 8 pm. The entertainment will be provided by DJs Luis de León, Alex Navarro, Laurentini and Dassierl, as well as Gabo Siverio on guitar and the Swing Latino Orchestra.
Mayor Leopoldo Afonso is looking forward to an „inclusive and diverse summer carnival that reflects our identity as a destination and as a society“. In the meantime, you can find some highlights from the traditional carnival below:
