Where to eat in Alajeró, from Playa Santiago harbour to the hills

← All restaurants on La Gomera

As of: July 2026 (updated regularly)

Alajeró, in the southern part of La Gomera, has established itself as a hidden gem for food lovers. The culinary variety is concentrated mainly around the harbour of Playa Santiago, where traditional fish restaurants are situated right by the sea, alongside simple village eateries in the centre. The local dining scene is characterised by locals and visitors dining at the same tables, and La Gomera’s typical goat’s cheese spread, Almogrote, features on most menus.

Guests looking for a good value meal can take advantage of the ‚menú del día‘; between 2 pm and 4 pm, a three-course meal with a drink is available for between 10 and 14 euros. Many restaurants do not open until 9 pm. Establishments that open as early as 6 pm are primarily aimed at tourists. In the smaller bars in the town centre, cash is often the only accepted form of payment. Away from the harbour promenade, a knowledge of Spanish is also recommended, as menus are not systematically translated into other languages.

Tips for your visit

Six restaurants are scattered across the mountainous heights of Alajeró, high above the coast of La Gomera. Their menus feature palm honey, which is extracted from the sap of the surrounding palm trees. Dishes featuring goat meat and local vegetables grown on terraced fields are served. Near the parish church of San Salvador, a few restaurants are within walking distance of the town centre.

A café serves coffee to guests taking a break between walks around the village. In the evening, the only bar draws locals together amongst the stone façades. Anyone looking for pizza will find just one place in the village. From some of the terraces, the view stretches down over the palm-covered slopes towards the sea.
