The ninth edition of this award, presented by the Government of the Canary Islands, is dedicated to Lola Suárez. Born in Arrecife, Lanzarote, in 1955, the author is best known for her children's and young adult literature and has devoted much of her professional life to promoting reading as a teacher.
Her notable works include "Cleta y Domitila", "Maresía" and "El misterio del collar". Her books focus on the islands and their history and culture.
Día de las Escritoras was established in 2016 as a nationwide commemorative day to highlight the legacy of female authors who have long been marginalised within the literary canon. In previous editions, Alicia Llarena, María Joaquina de Viera y Clavijo, Cecilia Domínguez Luis, Roberta Marrero, Olga Rivero Jordán, María Teresa de Vega, Isabel Medina and Elsa López were honoured.
The event will take place at Espacio La Granja in Santa Cruz. It is suitable for all age groups, lasts approximately one hour and is free to attend, subject to availability.
