Cristina Valido, the lead candidate for Coalición Canaria in the general election for Santa Cruz de Tenerife, warned on Saturday of «the risk that a right-wing and far-right government would pose» to maintaining the «measures and compensation that the Canary Islands have secured to tackle the difficulties arising from their insular status», as they regard these as «privileges».
Valido has warned that the upcoming political landscape could prove particularly challenging for the Canary Islands, given the reduction in European funding and the possibility of further cuts in light of the global geopolitical situation.
The candidate addressed the CC Political Council in Tenerife, which has ratified the lists of candidates for the Congress of Deputies for the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the two candidates for the Senate representing the island, who will be Alfonso Cabello, spokesperson for the Canary Islands Government, and Patricia León, Director of Equality at the Tenerife Island Council.
Coalición Canaria: Valido calls for independent action in Madrid
«Neither one way nor the other, neither right nor left, our sole aim, our sole priority, is the Canary Islands,» the candidate told the media following her confirmation.
In her view, the elections on 29 November are about choosing people who «will defend this land» and, to do so, they must act «independently, free from party discipline that would tell them to keep quiet or silence them».
For none of «the mainland parties» are the Canary Islands a priority, except «when they have needed Coalición Canaria», and that is why «more senators and more nationalist MPs are needed, to table many more initiatives and many more petitions in defence of the people who live here», she argued.
