Cristina Valido, the Coalición Canaria (CC) candidate for the Congress of Deputies representing Santa Cruz de Tenerife, warned on Friday that nationalists would never support any rollback of acquired rights, when asked about possible restrictions on euthanasia and abortion.
«We have always championed laws such as these; we have always championed people’s rights,» Valido emphasised in comments to the press after registering her party’s candidates for the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in response to a question about the remarks made by the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, on this matter.
Valido has framed these issues within the context of «pre-election debates» and the strategies each party is putting forward to encourage people to vote, but she has pointed out that CC does not wish to «get drawn into those games, whether with the right or the left».
Coalición Canaria: The Canary Islands set the political agenda
In the face of such debates, she has reaffirmed that CC will stick to its own «roadmap», focusing on the Canary Islands and issues affecting the archipelago.
«When the time comes and once the public has had its say, we will decide what needs to be done and what needs to be supported,» she said.
Regarding the candidacy for Congress, Valido has stated that it brings together men and women from the province who are committed to defending the Canary Islands and who are clear that this is their «sole mission» and their «sole cause».
«Neither left nor right. The Canary Islands are our sole focus,» she summarised.
Tenerife's concerns are to be given greater weight in the Senate
Alfonso Cabello, the Senate candidate for Tenerife, has argued that the island’s structural problems and challenges must be given a strong voice in Madrid, and has maintained that they have not been defended in the Upper House for at least three years.
Among the issues he intends to raise in the Senate, he has mentioned investment in the roads agreement, taxation and other pending investments in Tenerife.
CC candidates represent the smaller islands and the south of Tenerife
The number two candidate on the list for the Congress, Jonathan Felipe, has expressed his intention to champion, in particular, the interests of the non-capital islands and the ‚green islands‘, for which he has called for a different tax regime.
Felipe has presented the archipelago as an opportunity for Spain and Europe and has argued for the need to strengthen acquired rights and move towards new ones.
Senate candidate Patricia León has stated that she aims to give the south of Tenerife a voice of its own in the Senate.
