Esther Cabeza: ‚Historia de finados‘ theatre evening in Tejina
The performance tells the story of a simple family in Anaga who, at the start of the 20th century, celebrate Finados, the Canarian commemoration of the dead. Stories told whilst gathered round the hearth take the audience on a journey through the lives of earlier generations and encourage reflection on family, memory and roots. It is suitable for families and takes place at the Teatro Unión Tejina.

At the heart of the story is a humble family from Anaga who, year after year, celebrate Finados, uphold the tradition, honour the dead and keep their memory alive. On Finados nights, they gather round the warm hearth to tell stories, thus painting a picture of life in those days. The tales date back as far as 200 years.
The stories are characterised by magical realism. The characters include coastguards, seaweed gatherers, fishermen, witches and healers, priests, lost and blessed souls, emigrants and village schoolmistresses. Shipwrecks, pirate ships and the final voyage of the Balvanera also feature. The book illustrates how closely life and death are intertwined, how important family and its legacy are, and how essential it is to view life's transitions as natural.
