Shin'ichirō Ushijima's 2018 film is part of the Filmoteca Canaria's 'Japón se anima' series. The original version with Spanish subtitles will be screened at the Espacio La Granja in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The screening lasts 108 minutes.
The story centres on Haruki Shiga, a secondary school pupil and withdrawn loner who prefers to spend his time with books rather than with other people. In a hospital, he finds the secret diary of his classmate Sakura Yamauchi. In it, she writes about her terminal illness and her desire to make the most of the time she has left.
This encounter gives rise to a story that initially appears to be a tale of young love but then explores themes of friendship, loss and a zest for life. The film's title refers to an ancient belief in traditional Asian medicine, which the film uses as a metaphor.
Admission is free. However, an invitation is required and can be collected in advance online or at the box office.
