The festivities kick off on Monday, 5 October, from 16:00 with a re-enactment of the 'Remojo de los Chochos'. This brings to life a rural custom that has since disappeared: in the past, farmers from San Juan de la Rambla would take sacks of this legume to the water basins in the La Rambla district at the start of October to soak them there for several days, giving them their characteristic salty flavour. The re-enactment serves as a reminder of how closely this custom was linked to the festivities in honour of the Virgen del Rosario.
The revival of this tradition is spearheaded by local craftspeople María Dolores Santana and Marcelino Reyes. Together with local residents, they will demonstrate in minute detail what this process used to look like. The performance also serves to pass on local history to younger generations.
On Saturday 10 October, the Fiesta del Humo takes place, which has been celebrated again since 2011. At nightfall, dozens of participants descend the Risco de Las Pencas on the Barranco Ruiz hillside towards La Rambla, carrying burning torches and smoke flares. There, they are met by the local residents before the celebrations begin. The tradition takes its name from the cloud of smoke that formed when the torches went out upon arrival in the square.
