Hiking on Tenerife

Spring walking season opens on Teide, Masca and Anaga trails

Mild temperatures and flowering landscapes draw thousands of walkers each year, according to the Cabildo. Masca gorge requires booking in advance, and guided tours are recommended to protect flora and fauna.

Spring heralds the start of the new hiking season on Tenerife. Mild temperatures create ideal conditions for exploring the island on foot. Nature is at its most beautiful right now.

One of the most beautiful spring walks is the route through Mount Teide National Park. Walkers can enjoy impressive volcanic landscapes and, on a clear day, see as far as the neighbouring islands. The Masca Gorge in the west is striking with its rugged cliffs and lush vegetation. However, advance booking is required there.

The Anaga Mountains in the north attract visitors with a variety of walking trails through enchanting laurel forests. Local nature guides report that their routes are particularly popular in spring. The Cabildo of Tenerife records thousands of walkers on these routes every year.

Tenerife offers perfect conditions for hiking

Spring is considered the best time for hiking on Tenerife. In higher-altitude regions such as Mount Teide National Park, the conditions – provided a storm hasn’t just passed through – are particularly favourable. Exploring on foot offers unforgettable experiences.

The Island Council emphasises the importance of safety and sustainability in hiking tourism. Organised tours are recommended in order to protect the flora and fauna and to enjoy the Canary Islands‘ landscapes in places where locals know the best routes.

Active holidays in Tenerife offer a wide range of sporting activities, but hiking remains the most popular way to explore the spring landscape. Numerous routes provide unique opportunities to experience nature. The tourism board confirms the growing popularity of hiking tourism on the island.

One of the most popular walking routes is Route 040. It leads from Los Realejos up to Mount Teide. A 3,715-metre elevation gain on a single walk is considered unique in Spain. You can now find more hiking routes and ideas for special excursions right here on our website.
