The Minister for Territorial Policy, Ángel Víctor Torres, has urged those who have taken to the streets in recent weeks to demand housing and put a stop to evictions to go to the polls on 29 November and vote for whoever protects their interests; otherwise, «they’ll have nothing left but to cry».
«After that, there’s no time left if they’ve voted differently. That’s why I’m convinced we’re going to win the elections in our country,» said the Canarian Socialist leader on Thursday, following the PSOE Regional Committee meeting which approved the candidates for the islands.
Torres pointed out that his party has won eight consecutive elections (at various levels) in the Canary Islands and predicted that they will also win the general election on 29 November, because «the majority of this country is like the PSOE, and the PSOE is like the majority of the country».
Ángel Víctor Torres: Workers should protect their interests through political means
The minister emphasised that «the workers who get up every morning to provide for their families must be in no doubt as to who, from Moncloa, will defend their principles and their needs».
«The wealthy will clearly know who to vote for, by a clear majority, because there are those who advocate protecting the banks or vulture funds,» he argued, before adding that, conversely, there are also those who defend housing and social housing as a constitutional right, in reference to his party.
Housing Act: Torres criticises resistance from PP regional presidents
Torres emphasised that «there are those who are constantly putting a spanner in the works» and cited, by way of example, the stance taken by the PP’s regional presidents on issues such as the implementation of the Housing Act or the system for funding the autonomous communities.
He also stated that those who refuse to designate areas of high demand where rents are higher «have provoked a public response over a constitutional right».
The minister has therefore addressed those people who have taken to the streets because «they now have the opportunity, the most important one, to go and vote».
