On Wednesday, the PP distanced itself from the proposed legislative reform put forward by the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo (CC), which would prevent anyone who cannot prove at least ten years‘ residence and registration on the islands from purchasing a property there.

At a forum organised by Canarias 7, the leader of the Canarian PP and Vice-President of the autonomous community, Manuel Domínguez, stated that this is «a proposal from Coalición Canaria», not an initiative that the Executive has formally submitted as such to the Council of Ministers, which has been asked to process it as a royal decree-law.

In fact, Domínguez has emphasised that his party does not agree with this restriction and considers another of the measures envisaged in this potential legislative reform, namely, the provision stipulating that each citizen resident in the Canary Islands may only own two homes, to be «an aberration».

Canary Islands: PP claims to have the strongest representation in Congress

At an event where he was taking part in a debate with Sergio Ramos, the PP’s candidate for the Las Palmas constituency, the PP leader argued that his party is best placed to defend the interests of the Canary Islands in Parliament, regardless of what their Coalition Canaria partners in the regional government may say.

For his part, Sergio Ramos has also accused CC and its electoral allies, whom he refers to as the «Primero Canarias gang», of «spreading fear» by predicting that the islands would suffer if the People’s Party were to win, as a strategy to try to gain an edge over them at the polls.

Flight discount: PP guarantees the continuation of the 75 per cent discount

Proof of this, in his view, is the speech given at that same forum the day before by the nationalist alliance’s candidate, Teodoro Sosa, who argued that it was in the Canarians‘ interests for CC-Primero Canarias to be represented in the Congress of Deputies in order to prevent, amongst other things, the People’s Party from removing the 75 per cent discount on domestic flights for residents of the archipelago.

The People’s Party candidate has stated that he «guarantees» that, should his party win, this discount will be maintained, arguing that when the PP was in government under Mariano Rajoy as Prime Minister, it allowed the then-current 50 per cent discount to remain in force and «safeguarded the REF», enshrining its continuity in law in 2014.

Sergio Ramos has also continued to criticise the strategy of the nationalists who, in his view, are behind Sosa’s remarks, and has addressed the following message to him: «Stop scaring people, enough is enough.»

According to Ramos, Coalición Canaria voted in line with Sánchez more often

The People’s Party candidate for the Las Palmas constituency has also sought to distance himself from his partners in the Canary Islands Government, Coalición Canaria, citing their actions, which on more than a few occasions have run counter to the PP’s position.

In this regard, he stated: «Note that Coalición Canaria has voted alongside Pedro Sánchez more often in the Congress of Deputies than Bildu itself has. This is a fact which I believe should be highlighted in these elections.»
