On Sunday, the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, thanked the parties that make up the Migration Pact on the islands (all those represented in the Parliament, except Vox) for maintaining a consensus on this issue, despite being «21 days away from an election».

In a statement released by his government, Clavijo reveals that he brought together all the parties to the Migration Pact (PSOE, PP, CC, Nueva Canarias, Agrupación Socialista Gomera and Agrupación Herreña Independiente) this Sunday in response to the situation being caused on El Hierro by the growing number of cayucos arriving there.

Since 1 November, around 6,000 people have arrived in the Canary Islands in small boats and canoes, with a particularly high number arriving in El Hierro, where the constant rescues have overwhelmed the reception facilities.

Canary Islands: Migration Pact agrees on joint proposals

The President of the Canary Islands has announced that all the parties in the Pact have agreed on a document setting out the proposals which he himself will present this Tuesday at the Interministerial Committee on Immigration, to which he has been summoned for an extraordinary meeting alongside the President of the El Hierro Island Council, Alpidio Armas, to analyse the situation.

«The meeting was constructive and positive. I would like to highlight, against a backdrop of such polarisation and with just 21 days to go before the elections, the broad-mindedness of the political groups, of everyone as a whole. I want to emphasise this because here in the Canary Islands we do things differently,» he added.

The President of the Canary Islands believes that this will enable him to speak to the Interministerial Commission on Tuesday «with one voice», something he feels El Hierro and its residents need at this time.

El Hierro needs immediate aid and long-term migration plans

«It is in this constructive spirit that we are heading to the Interministerial meeting. We hope to reach concrete agreements that will immediately improve the situation in El Hierro, but which will also allow us to look to the medium and long term and ensure that situations such as the one we are currently experiencing do not happen again,» he added.

Fernando Clavijo is confident that, going forward, there will be the capacity to plan ahead in this area and to put in place mechanisms and protocols that will help to manage migration flows «with respect for human rights», bearing in mind that the Canary Islands are the European Union’s «southern border».
