The procurement committee of the Gran Canaria Island Council’s Sports Institute has proposed awarding the contract for the refurbishment of the island’s stadium for the 2030 World Cup to the companies OHLA and Sando, which have undertaken to carry out the work for 206.3 million euros (192.8 million plus IGIC), which is 28.5 million below the tender budget (234.8 million).
According to the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, the stadium’s owner, OHLA and Sando are proposing a 30-month timeframe for completing the works, which would mean the sports facility would be ready a year before the start of the Football World Cup.
The proposed award is still provisional, the island council points out, emphasising that none of the three groups bidding for the contract has committed any serious breaches.
Gran Canaria Stadium: Contract could be signed by the end of November
Now that all the tenders relating to the procurement procedure have been opened and evaluated, the process is moving on to the next administrative stages, with the contract expected to be finalised by the end of November, at which point work could begin.
The project involves major works on the sports ground, including the demolition of various structures that need to be replaced in order to implement the stadium’s new layout, as well as the subsequent installation of new elements and the fitting of the roof.
Three consortia were bidding for the Gran Canaria stadium refurbishment project, for which the first tender was declared unsuccessful before the summer: OHLA, in partnership with Sando; Ferrovial, in partnership with San José and Iniciativas Canarias; and Sacyr, in partnership with Construplan and Bitumex.
