Gran Canaria-born footballer Jonathan Viera announced on Saturday that he was retiring from professional football at the age of 37, having spent the final months of his career playing in Thailand.
In a short post entitled «Thank you, football», shared on his social media accounts, the player from the La Feria neighbourhood of the capital of Gran Canaria has made official what had been an open secret: the end of his career as a footballer after 295 official matches with UD Las Palmas, played at various stages of his career, alongside other clubs in Spanish and international football.
«As a child, I dreamt of playing football. I never imagined all the experiences I would have. You took me from my homeland out into the world; you gave me unforgettable people and moments, and the affection of a fanbase that I will always feel is my family. Today I bid farewell to the pitches with the same enthusiasm as that child and my heart full,» Viera writes in his letter.
