Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife is gradually recovering. This is evident from the return of a long-standing institution. ‚El Burguer‘ is a bar returning to Playa Jardín, a beach that has recently become known internationally as the ’sewage beach‘.
The bar had closed in October 2020. It had not survived the global crisis. Consequently, reopening it was not viable. Things were then set to carry on as normal, but the beach was closed for a year due to sewage problems.
At last, the bar is back. Here’s the story behind it:
El Burguer is bringing new life to Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz
Beachgoers can stop off at a beach bar in the front section, which starts at Castillo San Felipe. However, anyone walking further on towards Punta Brava, with its colourful houses and Loro Parque, used to have to leave the beach area to get a drink. That’s now a thing of the past. Because El Burguer is back.
The town council shares responsibility for this: the Department of Administrative Concessions, headed by Pedro Antonio Campos, and the Department of Beaches, headed by Felipe Rodríguez, have been working to re-establish catering facilities on the beach.
Opening in Puerto de la Cruz: Mayor in attendance
This was not entirely without self-interest. For behind the burger bar lies Pamarsa. Formerly wholly municipally-owned, the company has since been partially privatised. It also operates Lago Martiánez, the large swimming pool in Puerto de la Cruz. Accordingly, Mayor Leopoldo Afonso was also in attendance at the opening:

In addition, a small terrace has been set up to serve guests food and drinks whilst they enjoy the sea view:

The opening hours have not yet been finalised. They will depend, amongst other things, on the weather and how busy the recently reopened beach is.
