Vilaflor de Chasna lies at an altitude of 1,400 metres, making it the highest village in the Canary Islands. From there, walkers can reach one of Tenerife’s most fascinating landscapes: the Paisaje Lunar. This unique formation is reminiscent of a lunar landscape right here on Earth.
The Paisaje Lunar, also known as Los Escurriales, consists of light-coloured cone-shaped structures formed from volcanic ash. Erosion has shaped these spectacular formations over thousands of years. The sight is so surreal that visitors feel as though they are on another planet.
The 13-kilometre circular walk PR-TF 72 leads from Vilaflor to these unique rock formations. The route, marked with yellow and white signposts, follows old mule tracks through former dry fields. Along the way, walkers pass the Pino Gordo and the Pino de las Dos Pernadas, two imposing Canary Island pines. The walk requires a moderate level of fitness and takes around four hours.
Vilaflor on Tenerife: first a walk, then a feast
After the hike, traditional dishes such as grilled rabbit and kid are sure to tempt you. These are typically served with Papas Arrugadas and mojo. Almendrados are also particularly popular; these are sweet treats made from regional almonds.
The walk starts at the Plaza de Vilaflor, just behind the main church, the „Iglesia de San Pedro“. There is a car park nearby that is large enough, making it easy to get there, for example, compared to Masca.
Walkers should pack warm clothing, as temperatures in Vilaflor are often noticeably lower than in typical coastal towns. Sturdy footwear is strongly recommended due to the stony paths. Furthermore, the footpaths should not be used shortly after heavy rain or storms.
Vilaflor offers a wonderful hiking experience off the beaten track. The surreal lunar landscape on the way to Mount Teide makes every visit a special adventure. Tenerife’s Island Council has recently placed Mount Teide National Park under protection (more on this here). Hikers should adhere strictly to the rules.
