Whale-watching expeditions are very popular in Tenerife. There are many operators, particularly in the south of the island, between Tenerife and La Gomera. This is where many whale families live.
Trips out to the open sea are available on a wide variety of boat types. Here you can see a catamaran.
First, we head out of the harbour, following the coastline of Tenerife all the way.
After about 30 minutes, and very close to the coast, the seagulls in the sky give away that something is happening. The boat immediately turns round to approach the animals. On the left of the picture, you can spot a dolphin.
But first, there's a break with a chance to go for a swim. In the famous Bay of Masca, the expedition participants can have a dip and enjoy the sun.

Then, at last, we head out to see the whales. And after just a few hundred metres, a sudden silence falls across the deck. The first participants have spotted a whale.
The boat approaches cautiously. And lo and behold: a second whale surfaces.
And after just a few seconds, a third bottlenose dolphin can be seen.

This area off the coast of Tenerife is also known as the 'whale nursery', as mothers and their calves are often spotted here, as in this picture.
The unique atmosphere created when you come into contact with these majestic animals is something that photographs can hardly capture. You simply have to experience it for yourself.

Curious animals swim alongside the boats or even swim underneath them. This means the whales are often close enough to touch.
In particular, the loud hissing sound of the whales exhaling through the blowholes on their backs stays in the memories of those taking part in whale-watching expeditions for a long time.
Whale-watching on Tenerife is a real experience. The afternoon trips in particular create a wonderful atmosphere as you head back towards the harbour at sunset after encountering these amazing animals.
And so ends a very special trip out onto the Atlantic. Our advice if you're planning a whale-watching tour: please make sure you choose a certified operator. They respect and protect these wonderful animals. You can find further information here.
