Gran Canaria has received its first award of the year for its beaches: Playa de Maspalomas, in the south of the Canary Islands, has recently been named one of the best beaches in the world.
Popular travel destinations, restaurants and activities are regularly recognised by the travel website ‚Tripadvisor‘. The awards are based on travellers‘ reviews. A particularly high number of positive reviews leads to the ‚Travellers‘ Choice Award‘.
Gran Canaria has now been ranked twelfth in the global ranking of the best beaches. Among European beaches, Playa de Maspalomas even came sixth in the ‚Best of the Best: Beaches in Europe‘ category.

Playa de Maspalomas is often described as the heart of Gran Canaria. The beach is considered particularly beautiful and its facilities are regarded as excellent. The vast dunes and crystal-clear water attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
The area around San Bartolomé de Tirajana, where Playa de Maspalomas is situated, also offers a wide range of leisure activities. From water sports to cosy beach cafés, there is something for everyone.
Having been recognised as one of the world’s best beaches, the local council is now hoping to attract more visitors. Recently, the Canary Islands have regularly exceeded the holidaymaker figures of previous years. Tourism experts are expecting further record numbers of holidaymakers this year.
In recent years, Gran Canaria has had to contend with a backlog of renovation work and, as a result, even a brief dip in visitor numbers.
