In his book, Marcial Morera examines an area that has so far been only partially explored in Canarian linguistic research: the historical development of Spanish in the Canary Islands. Whilst the current characteristics of this language variant are well documented, its development over longer periods of time remains difficult to grasp.
The author cites, above all, the small number of private documents that reflect actual language use in past eras as the main reason for this. The book is therefore not intended as a complete history of the dialect of the Canary Islands, but rather as a collection of detailed analyses and a critical review of earlier interpretations.
Topics covered include linguistic borrowings from other languages, shifts in the meanings of words and developments in grammar. The aim is to provide an insight into how the variant of Spanish from the Canary Islands has taken shape over time. The event will take place on 5 November at 19:00 at the Centro Bibliotecario Insular; admission is free.
