FICINDIE, the Canary Islands' International Festival of Independent Art-House Cinema, is returning to La Palma for its sixth edition. The festival event will take place in the Salón Noble of the Real Sociedad Cosmológica in Santa Cruz de La Palma and forms part of the festival programme, which runs from 1 to 31 October across the Canary Islands.
To kick off the event, La Palma-based writer and screenwriter Sandra Lorenzo will speak on the topic of 'Independent cinema and consciousness'. Lorenzo is also a member of this year's international festival jury, alongside experts from Colombia, Panama, Poland, Chile and the Canary Islands. This will be followed by a screening of four short films.
The programme features "Las hijas blancas" by Arima León and Daute Campos, as well as "Me llamo Binta" by Juan Luis Rod and José Naranjo, both of which are in competition in the "Film Canario" category of the official selection. Also included are "Estrella" by Anatael Pérez and "Ubuntu", a short documentary by Josune Fernández Beitia and Sandra Lorenzo.
The programme's themes range from a birth in a remote island village to the story of a young Senegalese woman who arrived in Spain as a minor on a cayuco, and a schoolgirl whose teacher realises that something is wrong. "Ubuntu" was awarded the prize for best documentary short film at the Festival de la Imatge de Calella de Barcelona.
