Equipment may be replaced at four power stations on three islands. The Canary Islands Government has given its approval. This concerns three gas turbines at the Barranco de Tirajana power station on Gran Canaria, as well as the Jinámar and Los Guinchos power stations on La Palma and the Granadilla power station on Tenerife.
Following an application from Unión Eléctrica de Canarias Generación, the Directorate-General for Energy has authorised the refurbishment and modernisation of the G2B, TG3B and TG4B turbines. This is intended to extend their operational life, whilst the power station’s output and fuel consumption remain unchanged.
At the Barranco de Tirajana power station on Gran Canaria, G2B has a net output of 32.34 megawatts, whilst TG3B and TG4B each produce 68.7 megawatts. On 21 May, the Directorate-General for the Environment found no significant changes in emissions or operational impacts. On 26 May, the government declared the scheme a project of general interest. The company must apply for a commissioning licence within twelve months. This is stated in the Official Journal of the Canary Islands.
Jinámar Power Station on Gran Canaria: refurbishment of two gas turbines
Unión Eléctrica de Canarias Generación will also be able to carry out work at the Jinámar power station on Gran Canaria. There, the G2J and G3J gas turbines are to be refurbished in order to extend their operational life by ten years. Neither the output nor the fuel will change.
Each of the two turbines has a net output of more than 32.34 megawatts. The city council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has assessed the project as compatible with urban planning, and the environmental authority does not anticipate any significant additional impacts. Before construction work begins, the company must provide security against any potential damage to third parties. The application for commissioning must be submitted within twelve months. The decision can be viewed here.
Los Guinchos on La Palma is replacing a diesel generator
The government has also approved the refurbishment of the D13 diesel generator at the Los Guinchos power station in Breña Alta on La Palma. It has a net output of 11.20 megawatts and is set to remain in operation in the long term, with no changes to its output or fuel.
As part of the public consultation process for the La Palma electricity system, with a total capacity of 44 megawatts, the project received a positive compatibility decision on 3 February. The planning application was made available for public inspection for 30 days. Unión Eléctrica de Canarias Generación must apply for a commissioning licence within twelve months. The decision can be read here.
The Granadilla power station on Tenerife is modernising two gas turbines
At the Granadilla power station on Tenerife, Unión Eléctrica de Canarias Generación has been granted permission to modernise the G2G and TG3G gas turbines. No further local or island-wide planning permission is required for the work. The output and fuel type will remain the same.
The net capacity of G2G is 39.2 megawatts, whilst that of TG3G is 68.7 megawatts. On 3 February, a positive compatibility decision was issued for the project as part of the government’s tender process for Tenerife’s electricity supply, which has a total capacity of 370 megawatts. Before construction can begin, Unión Eléctrica de Canarias Generación must provide security against potential damage to third parties and apply for commissioning within twelve months. The decision can be found here.
