The lecture focuses on the ideal of womanhood in the works of Jane Austen. Irene Rodríguez Pintado explores the topic through novels such as Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion. The discussion centres on the aesthetic norms of the time and the ways of thinking that shaped these ideas.
The analysis links Austen's texts with earlier writings on femininity and beauty. Works mentioned include Rousseau's “Emile, or On Education” and “Sermons for Young Women” by Fordyce, Todd and Gregory. It also examines critical fashion theory and its contribution to the construction of identity, as seen, for example, in the work of Elizabeth Wilson.
The lecture is part of the third series, “Una habitación propia. Visión y huella de relatos femeninos no contados”, coordinated by Elena Ramírez at El Almacén in Arrecife. The venue is the CIC El Almacén at Calle José Betancort 33 in Arrecife. Admission is free.
