MUNA has been organising the Musa Festival since 2014 and dedicates each edition to a different culture; so far, these have included Morocco, Japan, Senegal, Argentina, China, Germany and Brazil. Mexico was the focus as early as 2015. The 2026 edition does not present a single, uniform image of Mexico, but aims to showcase its diverse facets and highlight connections across the Atlantic.
The focus is on the exhibition "Concomitancias. Legados, presencia y futuros indígenas en México y Canarias", which will run from 1 September to 1 November 2026. It explores parallels, connections and tensions between the two regions, for example in relation to colonisation, cultural mixing and identity.
The supporting programme begins on 2 September at 19:00 with a discussion between Larisa Pérez and Gloria Godínez on Candelaria/Chaxiraxi and Guadalupe/Tonantzin. This will be followed on 4 September at 21:00 by an evening featuring the performance 'Rojo descolonial' by Gloria Godínez, traditional Mexican dance by the Yacambú group, a performance by Yuli y su mariachi and a set by DJ Kali. On 5 September, there will be a workshop on cochineal stamping, and on 12 September, a 'Sabores de México' cookery workshop with Armando Saldanha.
On several Thursdays at 21:00, there will be open-air cinema screenings, including 'La camarista', 'Museo', 'Tótem' and 'Sujo'. Live music will be provided by Bial Hclap (11 September), Fuensanta (18 September) and Mencey Romántico with boleros (25 September). To mark Día de México on 16 September at 21:00, Los Sabandeños will be singing Mexican songs. A piñata workshop is on the programme for 19 September, whilst on 23 September, Alejandro de Vera will give a talk on travelling across the Atlantic.
