The opera is being staged as part of the Ópera de Tenerife season at the Auditorio de Tenerife, bringing contemporary Spanish musical theatre to the Sala Sinfónica. It is based on Max Aub's one-act play from 1944, set during a sleepless night in 1947 whilst in exile in Mexico. Jesús Torres, winner of the 2012 National Music Prize, adapted this into his operatic debut: a one-act chamber opera divided into twelve 'moments'. In 2025, “Tránsito” received the award for Best New Contemporary Lyric Production at the Premios Ópera XXI.
At its heart are characters who live with loss, silence and inherited wounds. The plot revolves around the consequences of the Spanish Republican exile, as well as loyalties, political disappointments and personal failure. According to the organisers, the music employs a dense, complex orchestral language from the outset, mirroring the unsettling text.
The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra performs under the baton of Jordi Francés. Carles Alfaro is responsible for the staging. The set was designed by Luis Crespo, the costumes by Carmen Arce, the lighting by Antonio Castro and the video by Amador Artiga. The leading roles are sung by Carmen Artaza as Tránsito, Isaac Galán as Emilio, María Miró as Cruz, Toni Marsol as Alfredo and Pablo García López as Pedro. The production was created in collaboration with the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía.
The opera is sung in Spanish and shown with surtitles in Spanish and English. The performance lasts approximately 80 minutes. No admission will be permitted once the theatre doors have closed.
