Figures from the spring already showed fewer visitors and rising hotel prices in the Canary Islands. The months from November to March are regarded as a key indicator of the future trend in tourism in the Canary Islands.

Hotel prices are rising, whilst occupancy rates are falling in the Canary Islands

Surveys by the Canary Islands Statistical Office (ISTAC) thus reveal higher prices, fewer overnight stays and shorter stays.

In Tenerife, 316 hotels, with a total of 89,405 beds, are listed in the tourism register. ISTAC reports that 1.28 million foreign tourists visited the Canary Islands in August. This was 0.3 per cent more than a year earlier.

The trend towards shorter holidays in the Canary Islands continues in September, as reflected in the average length of stay. Travel experts speaking to our editorial team attribute this, amongst other things, to a significant rise in prices, which is forcing many package holiday providers to include fewer nights‘ accommodation in their packages in order to cushion the impact of rising travel costs, at least to some extent.
