Drago Canarias decided this Saturday to stand alone in the general election on 29 November, with its leader, Alberto Rodríguez, heading the electoral list for Santa Cruz de Tenerife and its Head of Organisation and Confederation, Héctor Morán, leading the list in Las Palmas.
They made this announcement following a meeting of their highest governing body, the National Secretariat, held in Fuerteventura, at which they decided not to attend this event alongside any other political group.
According to a press release, the decision has been taken on the basis that a Drago Canarias ballot paper in this election «will instil hope in the public and help to curb the rise of the far right», because it will give many people who are dissatisfied with the left-wing options, «statewide parties based in Madrid, or those who, whilst claiming to be nationalists, bow to their will», the option to vote for them.
Drago Canarias: Party criticises Sánchez and sets out its priorities
Similarly, they have criticised Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s decision to bring forward the general election, originally scheduled for next summer, as they consider it «opportunistic».
Since its formation, the party has described itself as «the only reliable alternative» when it comes to the issues which, in its view, are of concern to the people of the Canary Islands, such as the need to reduce tourism, sovereignty over territorial waters, limiting the purchase of property for speculative purposes, and promoting economic diversification, amongst others.
«Drago Canarias has been carrying out hard work in the areas of activism, raising awareness and organisational development across all parts of the archipelago through its various regional branches and spokespersons, with the aim of listening to the voluntary sector, gaining first-hand insight into the issues and putting forward proposals for change,» the statement reads.
Alberto Rodríguez and Héctor Morán head the electoral lists
The party’s National Secretariat has also decided that Alberto Rodríguez will head the list for Santa Cruz de Tenerife, whilst Héctor Morán will do so for the province of Las Palmas.
With regard to Rodríguez, who is currently a councillor for Drago on the San Cristóbal de La Laguna City Council (Tenerife) and who previously served as a Member of Parliament for Podemos for several terms, attention has been drawn precisely to that parliamentary experience and also to the fact that he was «a victim of ‚lawfare‘ orchestrated jointly by Spanish right-wing and left-wing forces».
For their part, they have pointed out that he has «extensive technical and political experience» both in the Congress of Deputies and at the Ministry of Labour and the Social Economy.
