The PSOE candidates for the Congress of Deputies and the Senate in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife submitted their lists to the Electoral Commission on Thursday with a warning: 29 November «is not just another election» but «a referendum on the country we want for the next four years».

Speaking to the media, parliamentary candidate José Antonio Valbuena spoke of «a historic moment» in which the province’s Socialists will work to ensure that Pedro Sánchez remains Prime Minister, «because we want to continue increasing pensions and the minimum wage», and «by supporting public education».

«We want a Spain that, over the next four years, continues to gain rights rather than rolling back 40 years of rights,» Valbuena elaborated, referring to Argentine President Javier Milei’s visit to Madrid to warn that the right wing wants to «turn Spain into an Argentina».

PSOE Tenerife: Valbuena is focusing on a door-to-door campaign

«We refuse to accept that and we’re going out there with conviction. We’re going to run a grassroots campaign, bar by bar, stall by stall, market by market, door to door, so that people really understand what’s at stake; so that people don’t just think about their own vote, but think about their grandfather, their son, their friend, their neighbour,» Valbuena declared.

In the run-up to the election, he added, «we are open to any criticism because we know people may criticise us, saying we need to do more, and we will. But the fact is, if others were told they need to do more, they would simply reply: ‚We’re not even going to do what we’re doing now‘.»

Tenerife: Pedro Martín highlights his political achievements

Pedro Martín, the Senate candidate for Tenerife, has stated that the Socialists will focus their campaign «above all on facts» because «people are tired of being told promises»; and that «a party like ours, which proposes an increase in pensions, is not the same as others who vote against it, it really is not the same».

«A party that believes in state education and demonstrates this by investing more money than ever before in education and in student grants, and those who have said no,» he added.

Martín has highlighted the Senate’s role as the chamber representing the regions and, as such, as a forum «to discuss the Canary Islands«, but noted that the right wing «has used it to stir up confrontation and cause trouble».

La Palma and La Gomera warn of a shift to the right

Kilian Sánchez, the candidate for the Upper House representing La Palma, has called for «a search of conscience» regarding what is at stake on 29 November.

In this regard, he has called for «preventing the PP and Vox from securing an absolute majority», but, above all, for ensuring that such a majority does not reach three-fifths of the Chamber «so as to prevent them from carrying out all manner of constitutional and legislative reforms that run counter to people’s rights».

Sánchez has highlighted the PSOE’s defence of La Palma in the Senate over the last four years and has called for continuity in order to continue supporting the island’s social and economic reconstruction following the volcanic eruption.

Juan Luis Navarro, the PSOE’s candidate for the Senate in La Gomera, has warned of the «danger posed by the far right», particularly on an island that «knows only too well what it means to be deprived of services, rights and freedoms», things that «have been hard-won».
