Teodoro Sosa, the CC-Primero Canarias candidate for the Congress of Deputies for Las Palmas, said on Saturday that this electoral alliance will face a first leg in Madrid on 29 November and a second leg in the Canary Islands in May 2027, a second election in which he does not rule out standing as a candidate.
He made these remarks to journalists after taking part in the presentation of the ‚Declaration for Canarian Unity in Madrid‘, which is backed by twenty local, island and regional political groups, on the basis that a strong electoral result in Madrid for this coalition of parties, «born from the grassroots», will lead to another strong result in next year’s local and regional elections.
The leader of the Rural Nationalist Bloc, mayor of Gáldar and second vice-president of the Gran Canaria Island Council, for which he stood in the last elections under the banner of Nueva Canarias, a party he left in January 2025 to found Municipalistas Primero Canarias, has emphasised that «the Canary Islands make it worthwhile», that is why it is worth going to the polls in 2027 under the alliance formed with CC for 29 November.
Canary Islands Unity: Alliances should grow from the grassroots
«We have always said that at local government level, each political organisation will be able to decide its own future because we understand that this is not something that is built from the top down in offices, as we were used to in the past. Here, all alliances are built from the bottom up, from the grassroots, from local assemblies,» he said.
Sosa has made no secret of the fact that the aim is to repeat this approach in the forthcoming municipal, island and regional elections «if each of the assemblies believes that the future must continue to be based on working together for this region».
«There will be someone here who will also be pulling their weight, because we are fighting to defend many of the individual and collective rights we have won. Those in Madrid will try to regain control of each and every one of the achievements we have secured in recent years, so we cannot let up; we cannot take a step backwards,» he asserted.
The leader of Municipalistas Primero Canarias has said that «if people see that unity has been worthwhile» in getting to Madrid, «when it arrives in the Canary Islands in May next year and stands for election in the local councils, island councils and the regional parliament, people will understand that this is the best tactical vote a Canarian can cast».
2027 Elections: Sosa leaves the door open for his own candidacy
Regarding his ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections, he has emphasised that he «does not rule himself out» from leading or being part of any of the electoral lists that will be drawn up.
«I am not stepping aside; quite the opposite. I will always be at the head of any electoral list or supporting any colleague who is at the head of an electoral list, always putting this region first; I will never think of my own personal interests, but rather of whatever the political organisation I represent asks of me at that time,» he said.
