Petrol prices in the Canary Islands have reached their highest average level since September 2022. Premium petrol rose by 1.5 cents compared with the previous week. The average price now stands at 1.491 euros. The price of diesel rose by 1.9 cents to 1.605 euros.
The lowest diesel price currently reported by a petrol station in the Canary Islands is found in Lanzarote, where motorists pay 1.437 euros per litre. That is 17.8 cents less than the island average. The cheapest petrol pump is on Gran Canaria: there, a litre costs 1.319 euros, which is 13 cents less than the island average.
Ironically, the sharpest rise in prices was recorded on the island with the cheapest diesel: on Fuerteventura, it cost 2.9 cents more than it had a week earlier. Diesel is most expensive on La Gomera and cheapest on Fuerteventura; for premium petrol, Gran Canaria tops the table, whilst La Gomera is once again at the bottom.
How is the Canary Islands average for fuel prices calculated?
Fuerteventura was already at the top of the price list in early August, when diesel in the Canary Islands broke the 1.50 euro mark for the first time. The gap between the most expensive and the cheapest island is 28.8 cents for diesel and 27 cents for petrol. For both fuel types, five of the seven islands are above the Canary Islands average. The fact that the smaller islands do not push the average up despite this is down to the way we calculate it.
We use daily figures rather than monthly averages for this. We analyse the petrol stations by municipality and island. We calculate the Canary Islands average across all individual stations, rather than based on the averages for the seven islands. Otherwise, El Hierro, with four petrol stations, would carry just as much weight as Tenerife, which has more than 200.
These are the cheapest diesel prices in the Canary Islands:
