The secretary-general of Coalición Canaria, Fernando Clavijo, stated on Friday that the co-founder of Primero Canarias, Teodoro Sosa, is «the best candidate» the two parties could field for the Las Palmas constituency in the general election on 29 November, a compliment to which Mr Sosa responded by offering to «lend a hand».
«I think he’s the best, don’t you? Right now, Teodoro is the most highly regarded politician in the whole of Gran Canaria. He would therefore make a superb candidate,» said Clavijo, when asked about this matter whilst visiting a wind farm in Gáldar with Sosa.
The leader of CC believes that the current mayor of Gáldar and second vice-president of the Gran Canaria Island Council «is destined for other kinds of institutions and challenges».
Gran Canaria: Clavijo backs Sosa as lead candidate
«Of course, it would be a real honour and a privilege for us if someone of his calibre and standing were to head that list within the coalition,» he added.
Speaking alongside him, Sosa emphasised that, at this time, anyone who feels a sense of «loyalty to the Canary Islands» must «pull their weight».
«My organisation, Primero Canarias, has been in existence for less than a year, but from the very outset it was established with a clear mandate from the constituent congress, which was: a forum for Canarian unity, a forum for collaboration and dialogue, rather than one that drives a wedge between the various forces. Loyalty to this land,» he said.
Sosa sees the general election as a test of nationalist unity
For Sosa, bringing forward the general election to 29 November represents «the first real test» for the nationalist unity to which his party aspires.
«All of us who consider ourselves nationalists longed for, and hoped for, the return of the possibility of an alliance between all the Canarian political forces. The unity of these parties in this sphere could pave the way for us to once again have our own political group in the Congress. For that reason alone, the personal efforts are worthwhile,» he said
He therefore emphasised that he would «lend a hand wherever my organisation and any alliance that may be formed decide».
«It’s not up to me to decide. I’m here in the municipality of Gáldar, going about my business as vice-president of the Cabildo. But I know we’ll all have to make a personal effort; wherever I’m needed, that’s where I’ll be. It hasn’t been decided yet; it hasn’t been discussed either within the governing bodies or within the alliance that may be formed,» he continued.
