Three cruise ships will bring up to 10,151 cruise passengers to Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Sunday. The Costa Smeralda, the MSC World Europa and the Ventura are due to dock in the port of the island’s capital. Of the three, the Costa Smeralda is the largest ship, with capacity for up to 6,554 passengers.
The cruise season in the Canary Islands traditionally begins in October. That is when European cruise lines shift their routes southwards for the winter season. This is also reflected in the cruise programme for Santa Cruz in October.
The announced recovery is preceded by a decline in the cruise sector in Tenerife. The losses on the island are more severe than on any other Canary Island. This is shown in the report on falling cruise passenger numbers in the Canary Islands.

The city expects these visitors to spend money within a few hours with tour operators, as well as in shops and restaurants. They do not, however, occupy hotel beds. From the perspective of the local economy, cruise passengers therefore bring in a lot of money in a short space of time without placing a heavy strain on the infrastructure.
According to data from the Canary Islands Statistical Office, the port of Santa Cruz, the capital, has recently reported a significant drop in cruise passengers. With regard to tourism policy, Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez described cruise passengers as «high-value tourists».
