Reader’s view: hire firms fall short on electric cars

A long-standing EV driver reports that rental companies in the Canaries advertise electric models but rarely have them available, and offer no charging cards, station lists or informed staff.

Von Kay Uplegger

I’ve been driving an electric car for many years. And I’d like to continue doing so in Lanzarote. As someone who regularly hires cars (always for several weeks at a time), I’ve found that whilst hire companies do offer electric vehicles, they’re usually not available.

Last time, I was ‚upgraded‘ to a soft hybrid car. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a pointless piece of technology.

What’s more, the hirer receives no assistance whatsoever from the companies regarding the use of the charging infrastructure, such as a charging card or a list of charging points. The staff at car hire companies in the Canary Islands are completely uninformed.

An overview of electric cars in the Canary Islands:

  • Range is really only a minor consideration in the Canary Islands.
  • The vehicles enjoy ideal conditions given the prevailing temperatures.
  • Car hire companies, in particular, could make a very good profit thanks to the low maintenance requirements of these vehicles.
  • Holidaymakers could simply give this fantastic technology a go whilst on holiday.

Hope springs eternal. Perhaps one day electric mobility will really take off in the Canary Islands after all.
