Cliff jump at San Telmo in Puerto de la Cruz sparks online row

The lower section of the promenade is closed off when the swell runs high, yet a young man leapt several metres into the rocks below and surfaced unhurt. Instagram users are split between alarm and shrugs.

The place is notorious. Especially when the surf is high, the lower section of the promenade at San Telmo in Puerto de la Cruz, near the sea, is cordoned off. This is because the waves have a magnetic pull on onlookers, yet can be particularly dangerous in that very spot at times.

Swimming is hardly ever an option there. And certainly not dangerous cliff-jumping. Nevertheless, a young man has now dared to jump off the cliffs at precisely this spot in the north of Tenerife.

He wasn’t injured. However, his behaviour has sparked a debate. The clip is attracting a flurry of comments on Instagram. Here’s what people are saying and what the video looks like:

Debate over cliff jumping in Tenerife

The video shows the cliff-jumper leaping from a height of several metres onto the rocky area. The video ends with this sequence. However, a short time later, the man reappears.

It was at exactly this spot, several years ago, that a teenager attempted a similar jump as part of a dare. A police officer who happened to be there saw what was happening and jumped in after him. To prevent the waves from pushing them against the rocks, he pulled the boy out to sea. Together, they waited to be rescued.

Video from Puerto de la Cruz sparks debate

The spot is notorious. The author of the clip is well aware of this. He writes: „Carelessness and recklessness in Tenerife. Someone jumps into the sea from a dangerous height, absurdly risking their life,“ reads the accompanying text.

Some comments agree with this, whilst others say things like: „The lad should do as he pleases. It’s his business.“ Some commentators are more outspoken and criticise the criticism itself. The general consensus is that there are enough regulations as it is. This is then followed by a reference to Darwin’s theory of natural selection.

The post is still attracting a lot of comments, and opinions on the jump vary widely. It remains unclear, however, who the more daring jumper is.
