Puerto de la Cruz is, in my opinion, the loveliest town on Tenerife. In fact, it’s my favourite town away from home. I’m actually from the south of Germany. Whenever it gets too cold or boring there, I book a flight and set off.
There have been many ups and downs. Puerto is beautiful. And yet, at some point, it really began to show its age. It was the 1970s when I first came here. Those were exciting times. I knew hardly anything about the south. And then, suddenly, I found myself so far away. In this wonderful city with these lovely people.
Puerto de la Cruz was beautiful. But I soon realised that everything revolved around tourism. The buildings were getting taller and the streets busier. I’d almost not noticed it at all. But one day, just after I’d returned to Tenerife, I got the feeling that the town was looking a bit dated. It went on like that for years. Whilst the old town was as beautiful as ever, the outlying areas sometimes looked terribly shabby.
Fortunately, people in Puerto realised this. And so the local council has done a great deal to revitalise the town. There is still plenty to be done. But I soon realised that things were moving in the right direction.
I love Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife!
The pandemic brought that to an abrupt end. Fortunately, I didn’t have to go through the lockdown. But from afar, I thought a lot about my Puerto. When I returned for the first time after that period, everything looked deserted. Hardly any shops or restaurants were open.
But today, it’s my Puerto again. I’m delighted that the town finally looks the way I remember it. And what’s more, it’s more beautiful than ever. And a lot is still being done to make it even better.
Every time I have to go home, I look forward to coming back soon. Hopefully many more times to come. Because by now I can honestly say: I love ‚my Puerto‘! And that’s why I’ll be packing my bags again very soon…
