Weather in Playa Blanca: the sheltered south of Lanzarote
Playa Blanca is situated on the southern tip of Lanzarote, directly opposite Fuerteventura. This Canary Islands has no mountain range capable of blocking the trade wind clouds, as the island’s highest point is less than 700 metres. Compared to Tenerife or Gran Canaria, it consequently lacks humidity. Playa Blanca is, therefore, a dry place.
In contrast, the south of Lanzarote is sheltered from the wind. Behind the ‚Fire Mountains‘, on the leeward side, lies Playa Blanca – the island’s quietest stretch of coastline. As a result, the beaches are gently sloping and family-friendly, whereas the north coast can experience strong surf.
The climate in Playa Blanca
The average annual temperature is 20.6 degrees. In January, the average temperature is 17.5 degrees, and in August it is 24 degrees. With a difference of 6.5 degrees, the town falls within the typical range for the Canary Islands.
Rain falls almost exclusively in winter. Annual average rainfall is 98 millimetres. July remains virtually dry, whilst November sees 18.2 millimetres of rainfall. The landscape looks correspondingly barren, and the tourism industry can promote the region as a place with plenty of sunshine. Humidity ranges between 74 and 80 per cent.
