Anyone heading to Playa Bollullo on a Sunday should be confident driving in reverse. That’s because the restaurant above the beach is very popular with locals. So you’ll have to keep giving way on the single-lane access road. But it’s well worth the trip!
The difficult journey there means that, although Playa Bollullo is considered one of Tenerife’s most beautiful beaches, it is rarely overcrowded. And so it remains an insider’s tip even once its supposed secret has been revealed.
The beach is part of the municipality of La Orotava, but is situated right next to Puerto de la Cruz. Among locals, Playa Bollullo is considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. And here’s why:
This is Playa Bollullo in the north of Tenerife
In a small beach hut just above the entrance, you’ll find the only place serving food and drink at Playa Bollullo for miles around. Visitors will search in vain for parasols or sun loungers. The service is good and the food is considered to be very tasty.
In a truly picturesque setting, Playa Bollullo stretches for around 400 metres and boasts fine black volcanic sand. The Atlantic waters are very clear and clean, and the atmosphere is comparatively peaceful. This, combined with the low number of tourists, makes Playa Bollullo a wonderful place to visit.
Warning: strong currents at Playa Bollullo on Tenerife!
The beach is situated in El Rincón in the Orotava Valley. However, the final few metres must be covered along a steep footpath. Yet even this path, nestled amongst banana plantations, marks the start of your relaxation.
The Atlantic should not be underestimated, despite the tranquil surroundings of Playa El Bollullo. The sea currents and waves are strong even on calm days and can be dangerous on stormy days. For this reason, swimming is prohibited all year round. Anyone who wants to dip their toes in the water is, of course, welcome to do so. However, Playa Bollullo is not suitable for swimming.
How to get there, car park & walking route to Bollullo Beach on Tenerife
Although the beach is hardly developed for tourism, the car park is subject to a charge. It belongs to the Bollullo Beach restaurant in the immediate vicinity. The road leading there branches off from the motorway, initially heading towards Puerto de la Cruz. However, the route does not lead to the city in the north, but instead heads towards the coast to El Rincón. At the „San Diego“ restaurant, the path eventually turns left and from there follows a narrow track down to the beach.
Incidentally, Playa El Bollullo can also be reached on foot. Walking trails lead from Puerto de la Cruz, starting at Lago Martianez or from the village of La Paz, down to the beach. Depending on your pace, the walk takes between 45 minutes and an hour.
